Commentary: From knowing to doing

By Neil Guilmette and Andrew S. Bluestone

If your firm is not achieving controlled profitable growth at a rate of 20 percent per year or more, if you are struggling to find and retain top-notch staff, if partners are working harder to keep less, if fees are an issue with your clients, if you feel you are struggling to maintain mediocre growth – doing what you’ve always done will only create more of the same.

Hoping to create a different result by doing what you’ve always done is Einstein’s definition of insanity.

To create a different result requires change. Change is difficult. What specific changes to make to create your desired result is another issue. That journey begins by clearly defining specific results in terms of income and quality of life sought for the partners and staff.

What are the results that you want? What changes must be introduced to achieve them? How long will it take? What is the cost versus the benefit? How will you create the change? How will you know where to begin? How will you overcome inertia? How will you know when you arrive? Who will make the decision, and when?

The journey begins with a decision. Say there are three frogs on a lily pad, and one decides to jump. How many frogs are left? The correct answer is three. Deciding to jump is vastly different from jumping.

A trap that firms fall into is confusing making a decision with creating results. We tend to become obsessed with making the right decision (paralysis by analysis), which in itself becomes a major obstacle. Did we make the right decision? Did we have all the information requisite to make the decision? Is it possible that a better decision could have been made if better information were produced?

While it’s always better to make the right decision rather than the wrong decision, we forget the simple fact that a decision by itself changes nothing. Did you implement the decision? Did you do anything? A decision is the beginning of the process of doing, not the end of the process.

Doing something actually requires … doing something. Doing makes things happen.

The currently popular concept of knowledge management advocates gaining intellectual capital to grow your firm. Learn forensic accounting, hire MBAs, develop niche-specific knowledge and get additional certifications. The American Institute of CPAs is advocating an internationally recognized certification and has added specialty designations for business valuations, among others.

What advocates seem to forget is that knowledge is only useful if you do something with it. There is a huge knowing-doing gap. Doing something actually means doing something! It means addressing the hard and scary work of making something happen. It’s much easier and safer to sit around and have meetings and intellectual conversations, to add to your library, build databases, train for additional certifications, invest in technical infrastructure – and never actually implement anything.

Doing means learning. Learning means making mistakes. Learning means tolerating inefficiency. Learning means tolerating failure. Learning requires encouraging and teaching people to try things they’ve never done before, to try things beyond their existing abilities.

The only way people learn is by doing things they’ve never done before. If we only do what we already know how to do, we won’t ever learn anything. The firm must make learning and stretching the envelope mandatory. It must acknowledge and support effort. Repeated effort and doing creates change.

There is no easy way to encourage people to learn. They must be motivated to learn for their own reasons, not the firm’s. You must address the WIIFM factor (What’s in it for me?). You must accept the fact that there’s always going to be a trade-off between efficiency and learning.

Learners are never as proficient as experts. Learning comes at a price. One price is the experts might not get to use their expertise and the learners might make mistakes. If you really want to build a learning organization, you must be prepared to make the investment.

The biggest obstacle to learning is fear. The most powerful and pervasive emotion in the workplace today is fear – fear of feeling foolish, fear of clients, fear of billing, fear of failure, fear of peer pressure, the accountant’s cultural fear of making a mistake.

Learning requires tolerating people who make mistakes. Learning means tolerating inefficiency. Learning means tolerating failure. To move from knowing to doing you need to change your firm culture to the opposite of traditional thinking. You must build a culture of forgiveness. A tolerance for error and failure must be built into the firm culture, not for accounting-specific issues, but for growth and development.

Traditional culture says, “Quality is the absence of defects as defined by management or professional edict.” We believe that quality is the presence of value as defined by the customer.

The entire culture of the profession, right down to the name itself, has developed around the concept of accountability. If you are to be held accountable for every mistake that you make, how many chances are you going to take? If you live in a culture that reveres perfection, how will you handle the mistakes of the learning process? How eager will you be to convert your ideas into actions?

“That’s the way we’ve always done it.” Another huge obstacle to cultural change is professional (or corporate) memory. The underlying emotion is, again, fear. Mistakes are the bane of the profession. The best way to avoid mistakes is to continue to do things the way they’ve always been done. That’s fine for the attest function – but it severely limits non-attest functions and restricts change.

Eventually, like with hourly billing, what was originally adopted as a means to an end becomes the end itself. What are created are sacred cows – things that are taken for granted, beliefs, processes, practices, rules that you perceive will help you get things done. In truth, all they do is create obstacles to getting things done.

So where do we begin?

Begin by making a decision to do something. Be open to change. Begin by building a culture of action. Cultural change is evolution, not revolution. It takes time. Be prepared to make an investment in time and money. Be prepared to start doing. If the doing is consistent, you can expect a handsome return on your investment.

If you expect the future to be better than the present, you need to begin now. Plan your work and work your plan. Remember that your goal is better than, not optimal. Do something today better than you did yesterday. Enjoy the result. Gain confidence. Internalize the new behavior. Then do something tomorrow that’s better than today. Internalize the results and move ahead.

Neil Guilmette is executive director of Stony Brook, N.Y.-based CPA Network, a practice management organization for CPA firms. Andrew S. Bluestone, CFP, is the president and CEO of Selective Benefits Group, a financial services firm in the New York Metropolitan area.

Goodwill Builders
By Joseph Anthony, CPA

For many tax professionals, finding potential clients is not a problem. Developing the right relationship with new clients, and maintaining high levels of satisfaction and goodwill with existing clients, is often more of an issue.

“We find that when clients leave an accountant, it is far more often because of perceived neglect than because of the fees they are charged,” says Chris Frederiksen, a CPA, consultant, and chairman of the 2020 Group, which provides business advice and services to tax professionals.

So how can tax pros build goodwill in their practice with both new and long-time clients? Here are seven ideas to keep in mind when reviewing your own practice:

Emphasize benefits, not services. “We want to have clients see the accounting professional as a profit center rather than as an expense,” says Neil Guilmette, executive director of CPA Network in Stony Brook, NY, a nonprofit association dedicated to, as Guilmette says, “helping accounting pros grow their practices, make more money and enhance their quality of life.”

“You want to make the transition from being an accountant who gives advice to being a business advisor who happens to have an expertise in accounting,” says Guilmette.

Have a sophisticated communication system with your clients. That means, Frederiksen says, having a way of staying in regular email contact with your clients. He recommends developing a system, either in-house or using an outside contractor, so that clients get some sort of newsletter or email update every couple of weeks with business or accounting information and news that might be useful or interesting to them.

Work that website. Frederiksen says that it’s important for tax pros to have what he calls, “a killer website.”

“I define that as a website that someone might want to visit more than once,” says Frederiksen, tongue firmly in cheek. “So you want a website that has interesting tools that your clients can use and other business information that would be a resource to clients.”

Develop a client portal. Tax pros can send clients data by email, of course, but that can involve several steps to make sure that confidential data is being sent both accurately and securely.

Frederiksen prefers seeing tax pros set up the electronic part of their practices so clients can go to a central site or portal and get information or files that pertain specifically to them. Typically, clients will get an email telling them there is new mail waiting for them, and they can then go to your site, enter a security code, and look at whatever you’ve posted for them. “We commonly call this a portal, but I personally prefer to use the term, ‘client mailbox,’ just because I think that is more intelligible for the client,” Frederiksen says.

Be a data repository. Tax pros routinely save client tax-related data in either paper or electronic format. You can also leverage the money you’ve already spent on technology to provide other low-cost but potentially invaluable services to your clients. One example: offer to scan into your computer system such crucial documents as passports, birth certificates, and marriage certificates. “If a client has a crisis such as losing a passport while out of the country, he could get on the internet, go to your portal or client mailbox, and retrieve a copy of the passport,” says Frederiksen. “How much is that going to be worth to him?”

Use your key performance indicators. Tax pros are familiar with all sorts of indicators and ratios that help them analyze the health and potential future of a business. “You can use the same analytical tools and concepts to ask clients what they need-where are they stuck, how can you apply your training and skills to help them,” says Guilmette. “Instead of just answering questions and showing the client how smart you are, you can ask questions and show the client how you can help him.”

Get proactive as well as reactive. The next area of developing goodwill with clients is to be able to offer comprehensive holistic wealth management. “Historically, CPAs have focused just on tax planning and estate planning and showing clients how to beat the taxman,” says Frederickson. “Developing goodwill increasingly means being able to offer comprehensive holistic wealth management-assistance and advice on retirement planning, long-term care, education planning, investing, succession planning; in other words, getting far more involved in the client’s life planning rather than just being reactive.”

“Formal education provides you a living. Self-education provides you a fortune!” – Th0R

People dreaming. They dreamed about becoming one of those filthy rich millionaires in a single night. They dreamed about becoming one of those successful Internet Marketer or even an Online Entrepreneurship. They dreamed about having billions of dollars from their online businesses. They even dreamed about changing this kind of a lame monthly Google AdSense income:

Into something huge and flashy like this:

Most of them were failing in the progress – but not now! Why? Because I offer you, along with answering the loads of blog comments and emails that I’ve received regarding to the Adjacking method which been described within my very book (titled as US$1,000 per Months from the Internet) the best possible way to cheat Pay-per-Click Companies’ money! And here is my story:

Simple! I prepare 2 files within my very computer named ads.txt and ignore-this.html.

Within the Ignore-this.html I inserted one PPC script which comes from AdSense Camp (Indonesia Local PPC Company). The script looks like this!

And I just upload that Ignore-this.html file onto my very website let’s say to http://example.com/scripts/ignore-this.html (this is just a fiction URL, you need to apply this on your own website).

After the uploading is done – I went to WordPress Plugins Directory to pick up one simple plugin which executed right on the index.php of my WordPress! I found myself stuck with this Let it Snow plugin, it’s quite funny since it only allow snow rains on your index.php for a Christmas celebration or some similar events! LoL!

I uploaded all the plugins component and open my WordPress Administrator Control Panel in order to edit the very script of this plugin! During the editing process, I just copy and paste an additional codes from my prepared ads.txt (do not forget to change the URL http://example.com/scripts/ignore-this.html into your own ignore-this.html URL) right at the end of the original script – makes it looks like this:

The next thing I do is to click the update button right on the bottom of the page and activate the plugin:

Viola! That’s it! And what I’ve got is a nice looking blog which will trap it’s visitors to click on my invisible AdSense Camp’s advertisement – the advertisement block itself will invisibly follow my mouse’s cursor makes everyone’s click (no matter where they click) being hijacked to my advertisement! Look at this picture (pay more attention on the loading bar at the bottom of the web-browser):

It then will overcome the biggest problem PPC players ever encountered: the lack of users clicking the ads! This is the evidence that I’ve got just now:

Within only 6 hours of demonstration, I’ve got 2,056 page impressions, with 132 clicks, which makes me Rp. 39,600 (around US$3.80). Let’s do a little math! US$3,80 per 6 hours – we’ve got 24 hours in a day which will makes my earning is somewhere around US$14.40 per day! As you guys know, we have 30 days in a month – and that’s US$432 a month! From doing nothing at all – it’s a set and go kind of a business! Hehehe!

So! What are you waiting for (especially you Indonesian), why don’t try this method now?! Hehehe! Good luck anyway! Happy PPC earning! ^.^

Special thanks to wSoul for helping me creating another version of the advanced scripts of this AdJacking!

Kepala Seksi Perdata dan Tata Usaha Negara (Kasidatun) Kejaksaan Negeri Jember, Nur Rahman, harus berurusan dengan kepolisian. Ia digerebek di kamar hotel bersama istri Agus Triyono, seorang pengacara.

Penggerebekan dilakukan Jumat (17/9). “Ceritanya, adik saya, Agus Triyono, ditelpon oleh salah satu kawannya, bahwa istrinya yang bernama Andi Rusni tengah berada di kamar hotel cenderawasih bersama lelaki lain,” kata Arif Dwiyantono, kakak Agus, Sabtu (18/9).

Agus lantas menghubungi kepolisian dan minta agar melakukan penggerebekan bersama-sama. Benar saja, ternyata sang istri bersama seorang laki-laki.

(Berita Jatim)

Bloggers – Getting Started Guide

What is a Sponsored Review?

A review is an article that a blogger writes about your product. We use the term “product” as a general term for anything you want to have reviewed. It could be a website, a service, or an actual physical product.

SponsoredReviews’ advertisers are paying for your time learn about their product/service, and write about it on your blog. They expect that you will help them increase sales by introducing their product to your audience. They also expect that you will link to their site according to their requirements. It is important that you read the advertisers requirements prior to doing the review. We will reject reviews that do not meet the advertiser’s requirements.

Step 1: Add Your Blog(s)

The first thing to do is add your blog to our database. This is done by going to the “Manage Blogs” tab then clicking on “Add New Blog”. You can see the requirements for acceptance as a blogger in our system on the “Bloggers’ Policy” section below. You will not be able to bid on opportunities or sell reviews until your first blog has been approved.

Step 2: Add Blog Screen

Once you have entered your blog URL into the “Blog URL” field, our system will gather stats on your blog. You will then be taken to a page where we ask for certain information about your blog. Here are some of the key fields and some important information you should know about each field.

Desired Price – This is where you set your price. This price is what advertisers see when they browse through our blog directory. There is no negotiating on this price so make sure it is reasonable. It is important that you look at our suggested pricing. If your blog is priced too high (compared to the quality and the stats of similar blogs) we may reject it.

Blog Category – This is the main category of your blog. You can only choose one, but do not fret, if your blog has multiple categories, you can enter them into the Tag/keyword field. Our system utilizes a tag based categorization system. Any keyword that you enter that becomes popular will be displayed as a category in our system, and your blog will be listed under that category.

Blog Title – It is highly recommended that you add descriptive keywords to your blog title. “Joe’s Technology and Health Blog” will do much better then “Joe’s Blog”. Your title is all some advertisers will see. If they see a keyword that is relevant to their product, they are much more likely to purchase a review from you.

Description – You should use this section to “sell” your blog to the advertiser. Explain how many visitors you have, or show some great examples of posts you do.

Blog Tags/Keywords – As explained above, we use a tag based categorization system. You should use keywords that describe the categories of content you write about. i.e. health, technology, pets.. etc…

Step 3: Search and Bid on Opportunities

After you have entered your blog into our system, and been approved, you can start bidding on opportunities. Note: It is not necessary for you to bid on opportunities in order to earn money. Advertisers will also search through our blog directory and purchase reviews directly from you. With that being said, you can earn a lot more money if you are proactive about searching and bidding on opportunities. You can see the Market Place Level rules on the “Bloggers’ Policy” section below.

We recommend bidding on opportunities relevant to your site first, as advertisers are more likely to accept bids from relevant websites. If you bid slightly below your “public” price, your bid will be noticed more. Our system shows the advertiser the difference between your public price and your bid price.

Once you have found an opportunity that you want to write about, you can bid on it by clicking on the opportunity name. Once you are in the opportunity details screen, you will see a box on the right side where you can place your bid. You can only bid on opportunities if your price meets the minimum price they are asking. In addition, your bid price cannot be higher then the price you have set for your blog.

Once you have made a bid, it is up to the advertiser to accept/reject/counter-offer:

If the advertiser accepts your bid you will be notified and you will have 7 days to complete the review.

If the advertiser makes a counter-offer you will be notified and you will have the option to accept, reject, or make another counter-offer.

If the advertisers rejects your offer you will be notified and all bidding will stop.

It is important to know that if the advertiser rejects your initial bid or counter-offer you will not be able to make another bid.

Some advertisers take a while to approve or decline a bid. Advertisers receive hundreds of bids from bloggers, so make sure your bid stands out. You will also get more acceptances if you bid on opportunities related to your site theme.

If your bid is not accepted or declined by an advertisers within a couple weeks, it will be purged from our system.

Step 4: When an Advertiser Purchases a Review Directly from You

Advertisers will often search for and purchase reviews directly from bloggers in our Blog Directory.

When an advertiser purchases a review from you directly, you are notified via email and on the homepage of your control panel. The item will be marked as “Awaiting Your Acceptance” on your homepage.

Step 5: Submitting the Completed Review

Once you have completed your review and double-checked your work, you need to submit the URL to us in order to complete the order. You can do this by clicking on the opportunity you are completing the review for (on the homepage).

Step 6: Getting Paid

We pay every 2 weeks for reviews completed in that 2 week period. We rely on your Paypal address being correct in order to send you payment. We currently only accept Paypal. We may consider other payment options in the future.

The vast majority of people start blogging out of curiosity. The idea of sharing their thoughts with others is appealing.

A small percentage of those people grow out of the curiosity stage, and decide to “Take it to the next level”.

Whether it be for money or just a bit of fame, it’s important to have a plan!

Here are a couple of suggestions for doing just that.

1. Define the Vision and the Mission

Despite the MBA fluff that you might hear out there, having a clear Vision and a Mission Statement is essential for any project or venture, blogs included. Don’t worry, you will not need to hire a consulting firm here. Just think about what you are trying to accomplish with your blog. The Vision is what you are aiming for (e.g., “My blog will be the most popular one on its niche” or “My blog will have the most active community around this topic”). You must believe in your Vision, otherwise it is just a dream.

The Mission Statement is how you will arrive there. Suppose your Vision is to have the most popular “Make Money Online” blog on the Internet. The Mission Statement for such a blog could be: “We provide reliable and practical tips that will help our readers make money online.”

Remember: “When a man does not know what harbor he is making for, no wind is the right wind.“

2. Set Goals

After defining the purpose of the blog you will need to lay down goals. Goals are extremely important to set priorities. They also enable you to monitor the performance and review the strategy along the way, if necessary.

First of all you will need long term, medium term and short term goals. Start with the yearly goal. Where do you want your blog to be one year from now? Then break it down: if you are to achieve that yearly goal, where will you need to be 3 months from now? This process will make it clear what you need to do on a daily basis in order to achieve your long term objectives.

Remember that goals must be both measurable and realistic. As a blogger you can use several parameters to set goals, including traffic, RSS subscribers, Technorati Rank, Google Pagerank and so on.

3. Check the Writing

Like it or not, people will judge your blog by the quality of your writing. Sure, design, promotion and other factors need to be taken into consideration, but writing quality arguably comes before them.

It is quite difficult to become a Shakespearesque writer overnight. But maybe that is not even necessary. If you are already confident on your writing skills, just hone them. Work some more on the articles to make sure they are polished and engaging.

If you are not quite confident on your writing skills, however, you will need to follow a different route. First of all, you can hire a professional writer to help you out. He can both write some of the content himself and edit yours.

If hiring someone is not an option, grab some grammar books and browse around the Internet for writing advice. At the very minimum you want to make sure that your articles do not contain grammatical or spelling mistakes.

4. Draw a Monetization Plan

You might not have the need to monetize your blog. Freelance professionals and consultants, for instance, can use a blog mainly as a marketing vehicle for their business. Most bloggers, however, will be interested in the money part. The possibility of generating a solid monthly income, in fact, is what motivates most people to take their blog to the next level in the first place.

Before cluttering your blog with multiple Adsense units and annoying Kontera text links, however, you should draw a basic plan for the monetization part.

In this plan you will need to evaluate when you will insert the ads, where you will display them, what the ads themselves will be, and how the whole monetization scheme will affect your readers.

Bear in mind that the user experience should not be compromised. Give the priority to your readers and not to some quick-money fix. The cents you will make are not worth losing a loyal visitor.

5. Design

As the Italians say, “anche l’occhio vuole la sua parte” (the eye wants his part too). You might have great content and outstanding writing skills, but if it is all wrapped with a messy design you will lose readers over the long run.

First of all the content must be readable. That means selecting good fonts, the proper line spacing and harmonic colors. Secondly, the overall template of the blog must be well structured. At this point you already know what you are aiming for with the blog, how you will monetize it and so on, so make sure that the design supports those objectives.

The bottom line is: if you are trying to build a professional, money-making blog you will probably need to hire a professional designer. And don’t point me to Steve Pavlina, he is the exception not the rule!

Brian Gardner

6. Develop a Promotion Strategy

There is a reason why companies and businesses all over the world spend billions in advertising. Now, while promoting your blog might be a little cheaper, you will still need to do it strategically.

What audience are you looking for? Where could you find them around the Internet? How could you attract them to your blog? Those are just some of the questions that you will need to ask yourself.

There are plenty of ways to promote a blog. Just think about social bookmarking sites, online forums, banners, text links, Google AdWords and so on. The key here is to experiment, analyze results, refine the strategy and repeat.

7. Execute

Alright, looks like you have everything carefully planned. You know what kind of blog you are aiming for, you have some goals in place, you know how to monetize and promote it, and you also know what design you need. Now what?

Now comes the hardest part, actually. Most projects do not fail due to a lack of vision or planning, they fail because there is no proper implementation of what was planned. In two words, get busy!

Apart from being descriptive, images will make your posts live and more appealing to readers. This will improve your traffic and the user experience. Advertisers might also get encouraged to order a sponsored review on your blog if they know that you will include pictures and examples from the product.

So far so good. Extracting images from the web and adding them smoothly to posts without making your site look like MySpace is not a simple task, however. Below you will find tips and resources for this purpose.

Good Ol’ Printscreen

This is the most basic method. It will not produce outstanding results, but it might be helpful if you are using the Internet from another terminal or if somehow you are not able to access other tools.

Most personal computers come with a “PrtSc” key on the upper right part of the keyboard. Whenever you press that key your computer will save a digital copy of your screen on the cache.

The next step is to open an image editing software (Paint will suffice) and paste the copy of the screen. Just edit the image properly, save it as a new file and you are done.

Notice that you can also “print” only the active window on your screen by holding Alt while you use the “PrtSc” key.

The Paid Software

Snagit is the standard when it comes to screen capturing software. It allows you to take screenshots of specific regions and scrolling web pages. It also includes several advanced features like video capture, special effects and image editing.

You can try the software for 30 days, and if you like it you will need to spend $39 for a single user license. Is it worth it, you might ask? Yes if you have a professional website or if you are planning to make money via your blog. If you blog for hobby probably you can get away with free tools.

The Free Alternative

I can’t blame you if you don’t want to spend 40 bucks for an image capturing software. While a free alternative will not provide all the features you would find inside Snagit, it will probably get the job done anyway.

Screen Hunter 5 is a screen capturing software that comes in three versions: Pro, Plus and Free. The first one costs $29, the second $19 and the third one, as you probably guessed, costs nothing.

Notice that the free version is not a trial one like Snagit. You can use unlimitedly both for personal and business uses. The only drawback is that it does not come with advanced features.

The software allows you to capture rectangular areas, active windows or full screens. It also comes with extra tools like color picker and delayed captures.

Trademark & Copyright Issues

Suppose you are writing a post about a certain company. Can you use that company’s logo in your article? Most of the times, yes.

Trademarks protect companies from people or organizations that use their logo in order to deceive customers. For example, an SEO consultant can not use Google’s logo on it is webpage because it would lead visitors to think that somehow he is involved with Google.

If you are writing a post about Google, however, you have the right to use its logo for the purpose of criticism, comment or news reporting. This is called “nominative fair use.”

The same does not apply to images within the website of companies, though. These are protected by copyright, and you can only use them under explicit permission from the author or owner.

The law is not clear about screenshots. Some people argue that you should be able to take screenshots or software and websites without infringing copyright, as long as it is for the purpose of criticism, comment or news reporting. The argument states that such usage would fall under the “fair use” principle.

When in doubt, seek legal advice from an attorney.

Finding Images on the Internet

Some times you will need to find images for your posts through out the Internet. Fortunately there are several websites that stock royalty free and images and photographies. Below you will find links to some useful ones.

stock.xchng

FreePhotosBank

Yotophoto

FreeImages.co.uk

iStockphoto

Big Stock Photo

Stock Xpert

Positioning the Images

Now you have the tools and the resources for getting images. What about placing them efficiently on your posts? There are basically two methods for positioning images within blog posts: using CSS and using HMTL attributes.

CSS formatting offers more flexibility, and it is the preferred method. In order to align an image via CSS you will need to create a special class on your CSS file. WordPress users usually have this file names stylesheet.css. Once you located the file just add something like this:

img.alignright {
float:right;
padding:5px;
border:1px solid #999999;
}

This code will create the class for all your images that are supposed to be aligned on the right. As you can see we have added both padding and a solid border (you can customize this elements as needed). Whenever you want to align an image using that format you just need to call the class within the img tag, which will look like this:

<img src="http://www.domain.com/testimage.gif" />

The second option involves HTML attributes, but it should be considered only if you are not able to use CSS because the align=”right” and align=”left” attributes will be deprecated from XHTML markup.

In order to use these attributes, just add them inside the img tag:

<img align="right" src="http://www.domain.com/testimage.gif" />

Finally, remember that images above the fold will give more visibility to your posts. A catchy image might convince an otherwise reluctant reader to investigate the rest of your content.

Here are ten tips that help me with my blog writing.

Make your opinion known

Link like crazy

Write less

250 Words is enough

Make Headlines snappy

Write with passion

Include Bullet point lists

Edit your post

Make your posts easy to scan

Be consistent with your style

Litter the post with keywords

1. Make your opinion known
People like blogs, they like blogs because they are written by people and not corporations. People want to know what people think, crazy as it sounds they want to know what you think. Tell them exactly what you think using the least amount of words possible.

2. Link like crazy.
Support your post with links to other web pages that are contextual to your post.

3. Write Less
Give the maximum amount of information with the least amount of words. Time is finite and people are infinitely busy. Blast your knowledge into the reader at the speed of sound.

4. 250 is enough
A long post is easier to forget and harder to get into. A short post is the opposite.

5. Make Headlines snappy
Contain your whole argument in your headline. Check out National newspapers to see how they do it.

6. Include bullet point lists
We all love lists, it structures the info in an easily digestible format.

7. Make your posts easy to scan
Every few paragraphs insert a sub heading. Make sentences and headlines short and to the point.

8. Be consistent with your style
People like to know what to expect, once you have settled on a style for your audience stick to it.

9. Litter the post with Keywords.
Think about what keywords people would use to search for your post and include them in the body text and headers. make sure the keyword placement is natural and does not seem out of place.

10. Edit your post
Good writing is in the editing. Before you hit the submit button, re-read your post and cut out the stuff that you don’t need.

I hope you enjoyed my tips for writing a blog post – feel free to share your own blog writing tips below.

Note: This article has been condensed from its original version to make it more readable.

Get Permanent Contextual Links for $1.67 Each

1. Links Embedded in Content are Very Powerful!

If your trying to increase your search engine rankings though link building, there is nothing better then a link embedded in content. Why? because the search engines have created algorithms that give more weight to links appearing to be natural. The idea is that links embedded in content are more trustworthy because they are probably there to be of use to the reader, rather then just purchased for search engine rankings.

2. Links on Relevant Pages/Sites Rock!

The search engines also look at the topic of the page the link is on to determine relevancy. If the subject matter of the page compliments the subject matter of site being linked to, the link is more valuable. Sponsored Reviews are focused on your product, thus the page is highly relevant.

3. The Content is Not Duplicate

Any link builder who has ever done Article Marketing knows that one of the biggest drawbacks is duplicate content. Article Marketing usually consists of one article being spread around too several sites. The problem with that is the search engines tend to remove duplicate content from their indexes, in order to reduce the amount of fluff in their databases.

Long story short, SponsoredReviews are as unique as the people that right them. Everyone of them is different. The end result is that more pages with your links are going to remain indexed.

4. The Links are Permanent

Blog posts are permanent, and so are the links on them. When you purchase a review it gets permanently placed on the blogger site. So you only pay once for a link that will be there forever.

5. Potential to Build 2nd-Tier Links

This concept is a little strange to some, but professional link builders know that the best links come from pages that have links pointing directly to them. In other words, if the page your link is on has its own backlinks, your link is going to be much more valuable.

Blog content is highly visible and syndicated often. There is a chance that your article is going to get linked to from other blogs.

Picking the write blogger is essential to building 2nd-Tier links. Great bloggers want your content to succeed because if your content is successful it only helps their blog….

As more and more people get into blogging, it’s become a Herculean task to attract readers. How do you compete with millions of other bloggers and develop an audience that consistently comes back to your blog? Here are some tips to get you going in the right direction.

The Fundamentals

Before we get into actual traffic building tips, let’s start with how to make your blog worth reading.

1. Consider Your Niche
Before you start the umpteenth tech or gadget blog, you will need to really consider the odds of breaking into this already overcrowded niche. Try to find a segment of an industry that no one else covers, or at the very least, try to find a way to present your blog in a light that makes it stand out from everyone else’s on the same subject.

Many people make the mistake of assuming that a popular blog is popular because of the subjects that are covered, and they try to create an exact clone. Blogs are popular not only for the information they present, but for the way it is presented. Whether it’s a smart-alecky blog, or a serious and in-depth blog, each blogger has their own writing style.

2. Be Original
The first point leads us to originality. If you’re not sure what your writing style is, don’t just copy the most popular blog you can find. Readers are savvy, and trying to pass over a poorly written clone will not work. Find your own voice, and don’t be afraid to be yourself. Let your personality shine through your words, whether you’re sarcastic or serious.

On the same topic, when you’re looking for something to blog about, try to come up with original subjects. While it is tempting to see what someone else is blogging about and then re-blog about it, it creates a vicious cycle where only a few stories are discussed. Try to find something in the news, or something that is pertinent to your niche that has not been beaten to death.

3. Don’t Forget the Design
Thanks to templates that work on various blog platforms, it’s never been easier to completely customize your blog. Unfortunately, this can lead to overkill and a hideous reading experience. While you may think purple text on a black background is terrific, chances are, not many people will share your opinion. Try to go with a color scheme that will be pleasing to most people’s eyes. You want to encourage people to actually read your blog, not run away with bleeding eyes.

In addition to actual colors, try to find a reader friendly layout that will encourage readers to stay on your blog. It’s best not to have any ads when you’re first starting out, but if you do have a few, keep them to a minimum and make sure they are unobtrusive.

4. Choose the Right Platform for Your Blog
It’s important to pick a platform for your blog that you’ll be comfortable using. WordPress is a very popular choice, followed closely by Blogger. Both offer free versions, making it easy to get started. If you are really serious about blogging, it’s a good idea to purchase a domain name and set-up your own website. However you can set up your domain to forward to your free blog, if you are trying to cut costs.

5. Choose the Right Domain Name for Your Blog
You’ll need to pick a domain name that is searchable and adequately describes what you will be talking about. If you are not a well known personality, then it is probably not a good idea to use your own name as your blog’s url. For example, johndoe.com would not be as searchable as a name that incorporates what you’ll be discussing.

Building Your Audience

Now that you have your fundamentals in order, it’s time to start building your audience. Here are some tips on how to build a good foundation that will help you increase your traffic.

1. Consistency is Key
Once you begin your blog, you’ll need to find a schedule and then stick to it. If you don’t think you’ll be able to blog every day, try to set aside at least one day a week that can be devoted to your blog. Keep in mind however that blogs that are updated frequently are usually more highly trafficked. Consistency will help your audience rely on you for information, since they know it will always be published at a set time. While you may not be able to stick to your schedule all the time, make an effort to publish as frequently as you can.

2. Picking the Right Topics
Try to focus your blog on interesting topics within your niche that other people will actually want to read. While you may be passionate about a specific subject, others may not share this interest. Try to find an angle to your posts that will interest a wide variety of people to ensure that your blog will appeal to a larger audience. This could mean covering hot or breaking news, or even in-depth looks at more obscure topics that are still interesting.

3. Interaction is Important
Enabling the comments feature on your blog can encourage readers to interact with you and feel like their opinion counts for something. If you are nervous about flame wars or spam, set the comment feature so that you have to approve comments that are posted before they go live. Keep in mind though that an empty comment section is just as bad as not having the option to leave a comment. Try to gauge the amount of traffic your blog is getting and as it increases, add the ability for your readers to comment. Likewise, if you’re getting a lot of email, this is a sign that a comments section would be beneficial for your blog.

4. Master the Art of Tagging
Technorati tags have made otherwise unknown bloggers household names. Frequently check which tags are the most popular and incorporate them into your blog. However, don’t use tags that don’t apply, simply because they are popular. It’s a good idea to use at least three to five tags per post, but don’t overdo it or stuff your post with tags.

5. Offer Digg This and Other Social Bookmarking Options
Give your readers the opportunity to share your blog with others by incorporating a Digg This button, or other social bookmarking links. Most blogging platforms now have plugins to easily add these buttons to each of your posts, or you can always add them manually. Just don’t overdue it, pick a few of the biggest and stick with those.

6. Digg Yourself – But Do it Wisely
If no one is digging your posts, you can always Digg them on your own, but remember this important caveat: Interesting posts = Digg Success. Boring or spam posts = bad Digg experience. If you’re in doubt on whether your post is worth Digging, err on the side of caution. Do not make the mistake of submitting every one of your posts to Digg. If you submit every article you will get to be known as a spammer, and fewer people will Digg you.

7. Incorporate Basic SEO Principles
If you’re not familiar with basic SEO principles, they include using keywords wisely, writing effective post titles and utilizing meta tags when applicable. Try to avoid keyword stuffing in your posts, but you can incorporate a few when they fit. Post titles are an essential part of creating a searchable blog and they will help improve your search engine ranking. Be descriptive, but not overly so. For example, if you’re writing about the latest recalled tech gadget, you can try a splashy headline that will grab a reader’s attention and then pull them in with the rest of your post. Your post titles are the face that the world can see, so make sure they are as attractive as possible.

8. Don’t Forget Your Grammar
Blogs that are filled with spelling and grammatical errors usually don’t make it to the cream of the crop level. If you don’t have a blogging utility with a spell checker, take the time to double check your work in your word processor. While you don’t have to write like an English teacher, it’s still a good idea to avoid rampant errors.

9. Become a Reliable Resource
This plays into the consistency angle mentioned above, but in a broader sense. If your readers know that they can rely on you for reporting on a specific angle, or digging up great dirt, they’ll keep coming back. A great example of someone who has built a reputation on her reliable reporting is Mary Jo Foley, who has been covering Microsoft for over a decade. People know they can rely on Mary Jo for all the latest news and dirt on Microsoft and they keep coming back for more. Even if your niche doesn’t have anything as exciting as corporate intrigue or breaking news, find a way to really get to the heart of the matter and make your subject interesting.

10. Stay Informed
Subscribe to several relevant RSS feeds and news notifications on your topic. When news happens, break it on your blog. This has the added advantage of making your blog more searchable and you’ll have a better chance of attracting an audience if you cover topics that are consistently on the cusp of what’s happening.

11. Use an RSS Feed
It goes without saying that most avid blog readers expect their favorite blogs to have an RSS feed. Blogger and WordPress have this function built in, as do most other blogging platforms. If you aren’t currently using an RSS feed, now is the best time to start. Don’t forget to promote the feed in an easy to find location on your blog’s main page as well as within posts.

12. Find the Right Balance in Post Length
Shorter blog postings are usually well received as opposed to long, drawn out dissertations. Keep your posts pithy and easy to read, unless your posting on a subject that requires a long commentary. In this event, it may be a good idea to split your posts into several entries to ensure that you’ll hold your reader’s attention. On the other hand, brief and inscrutable postings won’t get you very far either. Try to strike a balance between the two extremes. In the case of this article, we felt that longer copy makes sense. Primarily because of the timing, since this is one of our first posts, we want it to be very informative. Most of our posts will be much shorter.

13. Promote yourself using SponsoredReviews

One of the smartest things you can do to build your audience is to promote yourself on other similar, but not competing, blogs. Pay another blogger a few bucks to write about you. You could probably build your readership for as little as $1 per. Now this isn’t going to be a good idea for everyone, but for professional bloggers looking to seriously grow, it could be the best way to get known.

Keeping Your Audience

Once you’ve done the hard work of building up your audience, now is not the time to slack off. You’ll need to continue using the principles mentioned above, and you’ll need to incorporate a few more to ensure that your blog not only maintains its current popularity, but that it will continue to grow.

1. Avoid Gimmicks
There are hundreds of schemes that promise to get your blog on the front page of Digg, and the majority of them usually backfire. Now that you’ve built your audience using solid principles, don’t alienate them by trying to take advantage of gimmicky posts to increase your traffic.

2. Use Trackbacks
Wisely. If you read several blogs, or if you are commenting on another blog’s posting, don’t forget to use the Trackback Feature. This will help you attract new readers and establish a more searchable blog. Don’t abuse this feature though, or it will backfire. On the same token, if you frequently comment on other blogs or forums, include your blog’s url in your posting, but avoid coming off as a spammer.

3. Post Items and Lists that Actually Help Your Audience
If you’ve found a great tool or a resource and you want to share it, don’t forget to blog about it. Make a list of sites you visit every day, or fun things that you’ve discovered. Lists always perform well and you’ll have a better chance of scoring a legitimate Digg success.

4. Reach out to Your Readers
Don’t make the mistake of viewing your audience as the great unwashed masses. Reach out to them and let them know that they do matter. This will build a level of trust and appreciation that will keep your word of mouth advertising and your repeat readers at an all time high.

5. Listen to Your Audience
If you’re getting a lot of “Your blog is great, but…” comments, you may want to listen to their advice. The best blogs incorporate what their readers want to read, further perpetuating the principle mentioned above. While it’s a good idea to avoid the “trying to please all of the people all of the time” pitfall, your audience may actually have some very good suggestions that will make your blog even better.

6. Stay Topical and Timeless
Thanks to search engines, readers may be coming in on a blog posting that’s over a year old. Keep this in mind when you write each post. If it’s not something that will stand the test of time, rewrite it. Find a way to incorporate information that will remain timeless, even if your posts are about breaking news. On the same token, stay on top of trends in your niche, and make sure that you’re covering topics that are going to interest your audience.

7. Watch out For Growing Pains
If your blog is increasing in traffic and you find that you need either more space or a better server, you’ll need to make the transition as seamless as possible so that you don’t lose your audience. Make use of redirects, both for your feed and your site so that your audience won’t lose track of you.

8. Interview Industry Leaders
As your readership increases, you’ll be in a better position to land some really great interviews with leaders in your niche. Try to publish at least one every few months. This will help you attract new readers, particularly if the subject of the interview is in the news.

9. Stay on Top of Blogging Trends and New Techniques
Don’t let your blog get stale or boring. Keep your readers up to date on current trends and take advantage of them on your own blog. While this doesn’t mean changing your theme every two weeks, don’t overlook the possibility that your blog may need a sprucing up every now and then to overcome reader complacency.

10. Avoid Alienation
As your blog increases in popularity, it’s easy to let it go to your head, forgetting your roots and what gave you that popularity. Never alienate your core audience. The competition in the blogosphere is incredible and it’s never been easier for readers to get their information from someone else. Keep this in mind before flying off the handle or posting something you may regret next week.

The most important thing to remember when trying to improve your blog’s traffic is that quality content is the most essential ingredient. It may take weeks, months, our years to build the next big thing, but once you get there, it’s definitely worth it. Have some patience and keep plugging away. It will pay off!
